AQC 2015 Melbourne

After thinking I wouldn't be able to go with the gals to Melbourne this year I found out this week that I could go to 'The Ball'. As soon as I found out it was possible I booked the whole thing including flights, in record time!
I'm doing two 2 day workshops - one for making textile portraits and another for fabric dyeing, screen printing, painting etc. Can't wait!

Note book covers

I've been busy making more note book covers to give as gifts (and one for me!) which are a bit time consuming at first but once you get a production line going it speeds up.
The instructions are on the 'Pieces of Pye' blog but I include a cutting guide for covering hardback books which measure 6" x 8 & 1/2" below.

Dear Jane scallops

A friend asked me how I intended to do the scallop edge on my Dear Jane quilt. There's very little on the net about doing this but I knew I didn't want to add each scallop individually and I didn't want to bind the scallop edge. But how to face those pesky scallops?
After some searching I found a great video that shows how to face an irregular quilt edge which is just what I wanted.
In preparation, I added a border to my quilt top much wider than the finished width of the scallops. Next I pencil marked the scallop shape onto this border before sandwiching the quilt ready for hand quilting.  I'm now doing all the quilting, scallops included. Once the scallops have been quilted I can use the quilting stitches as a guide when I sew the facing on from the back of the quilt (that's the plan anyway).

New improved version...

It's taken a week and a half but my sewing room relocation is finally finished. I sorted out all the messy boxes and drawers, found things I'd forgotten I had and threw away things I didn't need. The smug-I've-been-so efficient feeling is great, as I can now find what I'm looking for in an instant and am ready to actually get down to some sewing...

The extra space I've gained is well worth all the effort!

Where did it all come from?

I'm having a bit of a change round on the sewing room front this week as we needed an extra bedroom for my youngest son. I selflessly gave up my sewing room to him and am in the process of moving everything to the upstairs sitting area. I'm not admitting to the family that the old room was too small and dark and that I now have twice the space, a bigger window, more spotlights and power outlets! But I was horrified to see what came out of the old room....where did it all come from?

And this is just half of it! At least I have chance to get rid of the stuff I no longer need...

Happy New Year!

I haven't got anything exciting to post except another DJ photo - I'm just soooo enjoying quilting this quilt. There are 281 blocks and triangles in all and I've quilted 213! To keep me on track I've got a master plan to tick off the completed sections as I go....

What Next?

I really love using Helen Godden's technique for Australiana wall quilts. So far I've used kangaroos, cockatoos and lizards.
The animal image must be active in order to give the impression of movement across the quilt, so I'm trying to think what animal to choose next. Red-back spiders, dolphins, sharks and emus spring to mind but what else? koala's are too dopey!
