I recently did a 'Painted skies' two day workshop with Julie Haddrick, who was the guest judge at QuiltWest this year. We learnt to paint beautiful backgrounds on fabric ready to applique and thread paint the foreground. We painted a few samples on the first day, then had to pick one to use on the second day. Luckily one sample had worked really well for me, more by accident than anything else and here is the finished quilt.
It's inspired by a photograph I took of the Murray river at Ravenswood near Pinjarrah WA

QuiltWest 2016 Wins

QuiltWest has been and gone and I was lucky to win a 2nd and 3rd prize at the show...

'Just Peachy' started life as a class sample and was pulled out whenever I was teaching hand quilting. At some point someone asked why I didn't finish it and eventually I did! Once I got going I loved doing the heavy stippling and also using the peach coloured thread gave that hint of peach colour to a white wholecloth quilt. It only measures 16" so the prairie points were a challenge!

'Fair Trade' was a continuation of my portrait quilts, machine appliqued and quilted. A total opposite to 'Just Peachy' which was entirely hand stitched. Both took a long time to make!

AQC 2016

Hotel view of the exhibition building
I've been so busy since getting back from Melbourne that I haven't had chance to post about the fantastic week spent with good friends at the Australasian Quilt Convention. We had a wonderful trip full of fun, shopping, classes, meals out, lectures, trips to Fed Square and the NGV, Gala Dinner (I could go on...). I did a four day class with the US tutor, Susan Carlson who was amazing. I also had a quilt (Dear Angela) on display representing the best from WA, which is always an exciting experience.
I'll let the photos speak for themselves...
