Double Wedding Ring

It’s difficult to believe that we have been footloose and fancy free in New Zealand for almost a year! Our search for a house to buy goes on and we have had some amazing house sits along the way… since I last posted we’ve had a two month stay in Alexandra and are now in the middle of a five week sit in Dunedin. I haven’t missed my sewing machines so far and have kept occupied with small pieces of hand sewing but when in Alexandra I felt the need to do something a little more interesting. As Alex is over an hour from the nearest ‘spotlight’ or quilt shop I had to be resourceful and get the supplies I needed from the local Hospice shop. The fabric was a bunch of fat quarters someone had donated in nice colour coordinating packs and I decided to make a simple Double Wedding Quilt. I drafted out my own pattern and used cereal packet cardboard for the templates. I had enough fabric to make 16 blocks then it was time to put the top together and think about the quilting. I had to be creative when putting my Double Wedding Quilt together. I was still over an hour away from any sort of textile shop (via the twisty mountain pass road to Queenstown) so I went back to the hospice shop and bought a cotton single bed sheet for backing ($2) and a thin polyester kids blanket ($4) for the batting. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to sew through but it was perfect! Threads were a problem but luckily the local dollar store had packs of bright threads (another bargain…) which were exactly what I needed. I quickly quilted ‘sashiko style’ across all the blocks and am really pleased with my hospice shop quilt
